Malaysia (UTHM) hope to become the centre of excellence for Pencak Silat
by producing 30 percent of the country''s national exponents by 2015.
UTHM vice chancellor Prof. Dr Amir Hashim Mohd Kassim said UTHM''s recognition as a centre of excellence for silat early this year, has given the impetus for the university to excel in the sport of pencak silat.
"We are confident of producing 30 percent of the national silat exponents from our student-force, especially after having signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Silat Federation (Pesaka), aimed at developing the sport," he told reporters after launching the Deputy Prime Minister-International Silat Championship.
Dr Amir Hashim said about 500 silat exponents from 28 Higher Learning Institutions (IPTs) in the country and a number of foreign teams were invited to participate in the championship that would be held at IO1 Mall Kulai, Johor, starting next Wednesday.
Among teams that have already confirmed their participation were from Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam.
The championships will be divided into two categories, namely IPT which offers 21 events (gold medals) and 24 Under-17 events (medals).
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is the patron of the championship.
